International school teacher salaries in Egypt

Egypt has a large and growing international school sector, especially in and around Cairo. Some packages are genuinely competitive; others are far less so, especially after recent inflation and currency devaluations. This guide looks at salaries, benefits, cost of living and the key questions to ask before accepting a post.

Currency

Egyptian Pound (EGP)

Some offers include elements paid in USD or other currencies.

Typical salary band*

~ $2,000 – 4,000 USD / month (equivalent)

Established international schools in Cairo & major cities.

Contracts

2-year contracts are common

Often with housing, flights and medical insurance.

Key risk factor

Inflation & currency stability

How your salary is denominated matters a lot.

Typical salary ranges in Egypt

Egypt has everything from very low-paid private schools to high-quality international schools offering competitive packages. Currency instability means that a headline salary in Egyptian pounds can feel different in practice once exchange rates and inflation are considered.

Lower-fee & local private schools

Some private or low-fee schools pay salaries that, when converted, are relatively low by international standards. These roles may offer local experience but often struggle to keep pace with inflation.

For foreign teachers, these packages can feel tight unless housing and major costs are heavily subsidised.

Established international schools

Many teachers in solid international schools in Cairo and other major cities report total packages roughly in the $2,000–4,000 USD per month equivalent, often with housing, flights and other benefits on top. The real value depends heavily on how much is paid or pegged in a stable foreign currency.

Two offers with the same nominal salary can feel very different once inflation and exchange rates are factored in.

Cost of living, lifestyle and savings potential

Egypt can be comparatively affordable for teachers on strong packages, particularly when housing is provided and much of daily life is priced in local currency. At the same time, inflation and economic changes can make long-term planning trickier.

Everyday costs

Local food, transport and services can be very affordable in local terms, especially if you embrace local markets and day-to-day living. Imported goods and "expat"-style luxuries can be considerably more expensive.

The gap between local prices and imported goods can be large – budgeting with that in mind helps.

Savings and currency risk

Teachers on stronger packages with housing often manage to save a meaningful portion of their income, particularly if part of their pay is in a stable currency. Teachers paid entirely in local currency may see savings potential eroded if inflation outpaces salary adjustments.

Asking direct questions about currency, pay reviews and inflation adjustments is essential.

Who is Egypt a good fit for?

Egypt can be a rewarding destination for teachers who:

  • Are excited by history, culture and a busy, sometimes chaotic urban environment (especially in Cairo).

  • Are willing to think carefully about currency risk, inflation and the structure of their contract.

  • Want the potential for decent savings in a lower-cost environment when on a strong, well-designed package.
